Selena Gomez has revealed that her voice has been permanently altered due to a history of heavy nicotine vaping, confirming to her fans that she has officially quit the habit. Speaking in a video posted to her Instagram Story, the 34-year-old singer, actor, and cosmetics entrepreneur addressed the physical toll vaping has taken on her throat. Gomez expressed relief at successfully stopping, while acknowledging the immense difficulty of breaking nicotine addiction and encouraging others facing similar struggles to quit as well.
Selena Gomez Reveals Vaping Permanently Altered Her Voice
The candid disclosure provides a direct explanation for changes in her vocal tone that fans had previously questioned during an Instagram Live session last December. At the time, Gomez had attribute her altered voice to internal throat swelling without mentioning vaping. Nicotine dependency remains notoriously difficult to overcome, prompting the Rare Beauty founder to share her personal experience publicly to warn her followers about the long-term physical consequences of using electronic cigarettes.
“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” Gomez said. “I vaped nicotine a lot. Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it. It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice.”
Throughout her high-profile career, the multi-hyphenate star has maintained a transparent relationship with her audience regarding her ongoing health journey. Gomez was diagnosed with lupus years ago and subsequently underwent a life-saving kidney transplant in 2017. She has also been open about her mental health, detailing her bipolar disorder diagnosis in her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, continuously utilizing her global platform to foster honest conversations around personal wellness and chronic health conditions.
In addition to her health advocacy and managing her cosmetics line Rare Beauty since 2020, Gomez continues to maintain a busy schedule in the entertainment industry. She stars in and executive produces the hit Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. The critically acclaimed show is set to return on December 8 for its sixth season, which relocates the core narrative to London under the title Only Murders in London.
