Justine Wilson, the first wife of tech billionaire Elon Musk, has spoken out regarding the deeply strained relationship between the Tesla chief executive and their 22-year-old transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson. In new commentary featured in director Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary film Musk, Justine detailed the long-standing friction between father and daughter dating back to Vivian’s childhood. The author and mother of six of Musk’s children recalled that Vivian was the most openly defiant of their kids, describing how Musk’s demanding expectations created early divides in their household dynamic.

The documentary highlights a turning point following Vivian coming out as transgender, after which Musk publicly claimed on social media that he had lost his daughter to the “woke mind virus.” Justine stated in the film that Musk treated Vivian’s transition like the death of a child, a narrative she directly pushed back against by reminding him of the actual loss of their firstborn son, Nevada, to sudden infant death syndrome in 2002. According to Justine, Musk instructed her to tell Vivian that he would always love her, only to cut off Vivian’s health insurance coverage the very next day.

The high-profile rift has played out across news outlets and online platforms as Vivian dropped her father’s surname in 2022 to sever all personal ties. Speaking in September while promoting a campaign for Spanish fashion brand Desigual, Vivian addressed her public stance and criticized artificial intelligence, framing artistic expression as an inherently human emotional process. Musk did not participate directly in Gibney’s documentary and has repeatedly slammed the film as a hit piece, while his legal team threatened potential litigation over what they termed factual distortions ahead of the movie’s nationwide theatrical release on October 16.
