Cape Verde is currently putting together an absolute fairytale run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament debutants just shocked the planet by surviving a brutal group with Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, locking down a spot in the Round of 32 against Argentina. But right when the team should be celebrating the biggest moment in their nation’s sporting history, a massive dark cloud has completely overshadowed the party.
The team’s 36 year old captain and all time leading scorer, Ryan Mendes, is now the subject of a serious criminal investigation. A Brazilian woman who was hired to work as the team’s translator has stepped forward with graphic allegations of rape against the veteran winger.
What Went Down in Auckland
According to investigative reporting by Brazilian outlet GE Globo, the alleged assault happened back in March during a international friendly trip to New Zealand. The woman was hired by the New Zealand Football Federation to help the Cape Verde squad with language and operational tasks since the team’s official language is Portuguese.
The complaint states that following a match against Chile on March 27 in Auckland, the translator was invited to what she believed was a standard team logistics meeting in a room reserved for the national squad. When she walked in and realized it was actually a casual social gathering, she told police she headed back to her own room because she was not feeling well.
That is when things reportedly turned violent. The victim claims that Mendes later knocked on her hotel door, forced his way inside, and viciously assaulted her when she tried to fight him off. The official police report allegedly includes forensic medical data documenting severe bruising on her neck, legs, and body, along with cuts to her mouth and physical evidence of trauma.
A Complete Lack of Support
What is causing just as much outrage online as the accusation itself is the alleged reaction from Cape Verde football officials. The translator and her husband reportedly reached out to multiple federation employees, including operational and development directors, pleading for help and asking them to bench Mendes for the World Cup while the case was open.
Instead of stepping in to investigate, federation officials allegedly blanked her or swept it under the rug. According to text messages retrieved from the victim’s phone, one federation representative straight up dismissed the horrific ordeal as simply Ryan’s personal problem.
FIFA Breaks Its Silence
Because New Zealand privacy laws protect the identity of individuals under investigation before formal charges are filed, local police have only confirmed that an active probe into an April 10 complaint in central Auckland is underway.
However, with the story exploding globally during the World Cup, FIFA had to address the situation. Governing officials released a statement confirming they are in direct contact with New Zealand authorities. They emphasized that they take allegations of misconduct extremely seriously but noted that independent judicial bodies cannot comment on active, ongoing investigations.
On the field, Mendes has continued to wear the captain’s armband, starting all three group matches for the Blue Sharks. But on social media, the mood has completely shifted. Countless fans who were actively rooting for the ultimate underdog story are now jumping ship, expressing total disgust over how the situation was handled. As Cape Verde prepares for their historic knockout clash with Argentina on July 3, the conversation around the team has shifted from a beautiful soccer miracle to an incredibly serious legal situation.
